Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has emphasised the need for understanding of sign language among Nigerians for effective communication especially when in distress.

Governor Sanwo-Olu says sign language knowledge should be widespread among security agents, airport attendants and the general public, including children, to ensure inclusivity and safety.

Sanwo-Olu made the call during a courtesy visit to him by Federal Commissioner, National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, Tijjani Ahmed, at Alausa, Ikeja.

The governor who spoke through his Deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, said the commission can change the negative narrative of our country in terms of what a very small percentage of us do negatively.

He said it will also dissuade some people from taking advantage of our young people, who are unknown to them.

Sanwo-Olu also highlighted the importance of educating Nigerian youths about the harsh realities of indiscrimate migration to Western countries.

He said some Nigerians migrated without proper guidance and knowledge of the realities there, saying there was the need to educate families about the realities.

Sanwo-Olu expressed his administration’s eagerness to partner with the commission to redefine Nigeria’s national discourse on migration and displacement.

Earlier, Ahmed said the visit was aimed to solicit Lagos State Government’s assistance in hosting a meeting of African and European countries in November.

According to him, the meeting is focused on addressing human trafficking in Africa.

He said the commission was expecting more than 100 delegates from Africa and Europe to attend the meeting.

“The commission chose Lagos as the host city due to the state government’s demonstrated commitment to combating human trafficking.

“We are assuring that the agency will continue to collaborate with the state government to address this critical issue,” he said.
