Zonal Commanding Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps,FRSC, Lagos and Ogun Commands, Shehu Zaki, says some 5,137 offenders were arrested during the Yuletide for 5,736 offences on highways in the area.
Zaki said in Lagos that the number of offenders reduced by 2.4 per cent when compared with the 2015 figure.
According to him, 54 crashes were recorded during the last festive season, involving 421 passengers where 24 persons were killed and 123 injured.
He said the crashes were in contrast with the 46 recorded in 2015, with 23 people killed and 110 injured.
Zaki said the command was proactive in deployment of its personnel, with quick comprehensive strategy to check the traffic on the highways, especially along the busy Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
He said no fewer than 1,800 personnel were deployed to various routes to increase the command’s activities.
The zonal commander advised motorists to drive safely and obey traffic rules and regulations on the roads.
According to him, the FRSC has commenced public sensitisation at various parks to warn motorists against vices such as speeding, travelling without spare tyres, overloading and violation of traffic rules.
He said a good driver must have self confidence on the wheel and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol.
