The Ogun State Police Command has charged five suspects before the Ota Magistrate Court following an investigation into the serious assault and obstruction of police officers performing their lawful duties around The Bells area, Iyana-Iyesi, Ota, on 2 October 2026.
The incident occurred when a police patrol team intercepted and arrested a suspect found in possession of a large quantity of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.
While conveying the handcuffed suspect to the station, the officers were allegedly ambushed by a group of persons who attacked them with cutlasses, stones and bottles, resulting in injuries to police personnel, damage to the operational vehicle and the escape of the suspect.
Following immediate intelligence-led operations, the Ogun State Police Command arrested five suspects: Morenikeji Badmus, 36; Adedoja Segun, 40; Jeremiah Odise Ugbede Onride, 49; Mike Stephen, 28; and David Odeh, 32.
They were arraigned on counts bordering on conspiracy, serious assault on police officers, obstruction of lawful duty and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing suspects.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, reiterated that the safety of police officers performing lawful duties remains a priority of the Command.
The public are urged to refrain from physical confrontation with law enforcement personnel and channel grievances through established lawful channels.
