The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, AIG Olohundare Jimoh, has urged Nigerians to allow the law to take its course rather than taking justice into their own hands.

AIG Jimoh warned against media trials, urging the public to allow criminal investigations to follow due process.

Jimoh made the call while receiving the Publisher of National Express Newspaper, Dr Wole Odunsi, and his team at the Zone 2 Command headquarters.

He said individuals should avoid assuming the roles of investigators, prosecutors and judges on social media, stressing that criminal matters should be handled within the framework of the law.

According to him, there are laid-down procedures for seeking redress, saying People should allow the law to take its course rather than conducting investigations and delivering judgments on social media.

The AIG maintained that no one, irrespective of status or position, was above the law, adding that senior police officers were equally subject to it.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to improved policing and stronger security across Lagos and Ogun states, saying officers would continue to prioritise crime prevention, professionalism and people-centred policing.

The responsibility of the Nigeria Police Force is to ensure that people are safe wherever they are. We will continue to improve our service delivery and reduce crime to the barest minimum,” Jimoh said.

He thanked the organisation for the recognition, adding that it would spur officers to redouble their efforts in protecting lives and property.

He commended Odunsi for promoting security awareness through journalism, describing the media as a critical partner of security agencies.

The AIG said the command welcomed constructive public criticism that could improve its operations.

On investigations, Jimoh said cases within the capacity of the Lagos and Ogun police commands were left with them, while only matters requiring zonal intervention were escalated to Zone 2, an approach he said promoted accountability and timely dispensation of cases.

He assured residents of both states that the command would sustain professionalism, integrity and collaboration with the public in the fight against crime.

Earlier, Odunsi commended Jimoh’s leadership and crime-fighting record in Lagos and Ogun, describing him as one of the finest police officers. He said crime had reduced considerably under Jimoh’s leadership through proactive policing and urged him to remain focused on public safety.

Odunsi said his team settled for AIG Jimoh after he met some traditional rulers during a visit in Abuja who were full of praises for him.

He said the traditional rulers from Lagos and Ogun states led by a first class monarch, were at the Force Headquarters to congratulate the IGP, adding that his team was also there on appointment.
