The Lagos State Police Command has detained an Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP Omotayo Olajide, following a shooting in the Nosamu area of Ajegunle that left a young girl dead and another injured.

The incident occurred last Thursday, between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., when the officer allegedly discharged his firearm during an operation to quell a violent clash between two rival groups.

The police identified the deceased as Omole Taiwo, while the injured girl is receiving medical treatment and is said to be in stable condition.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, on Saturday, the Command said preliminary findings indicated that its personnel had been deployed to the area following a distress call over a clash between the Nosamu Boys and Alayabiagba Boys, reportedly involving a dispute over toll collection.

The groups were said to have been armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons.

According to the police, the officer discharged his firearm during the operation, and the bullet struck the two girls.

They were taken to Ajeromi General Hospital, but one was later transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, where she died.

The Command said Olajide had been disarmed and detained, while the investigation had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough and impartial inquiry.

It said the investigation would establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and determine the appropriate legal and disciplinary action.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, visited the bereaved family to offer his condolences and assured them that the matter would be thoroughly investigated.

He said the police would ensure that justice was done and that no officer found culpable would be shielded.

The Command takes the protection of every life seriously and will conduct the investigation with the highest standards of professionalism, transparency, and accountability,” the statement quoted the CP as saying.

The police urged anyone with information that could assist the investigation to report to the nearest police station or the Command’s Public Relations Department.
