United Nations General Assembly on the 19th of August 1982 decided to choose the 4th of June as the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression in order to increase awareness for the protection of children’s rights all over the world especially in Nations where there are wars and killings.
The International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression recognizes that children and vulnerable ones have been victims of physical, emotional and mental abuse; Children and vulnerable members of society are more open to these different forms of human right violations as they lack the ability in most cases to defend themselves in these situations.
In Nigeria today, it is a known fact that children and young ones are among the highest number of victims of those suffering different forms of violence that include insurgency, abductions, kidnappings, bombings, sexual violence, killings amongst others.
The International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression is a day to sensitize the world at large that the rights of children must be protected from all forms of physical, mental, and emotional abuse.
Peace and Conflict Resolution Resource Centre (PEACrEc) on this day calls on all governments, stakeholders, and those in authority to end all forms of violence against children.
We share in the commitment of the United Nations to protect the rights of children and so we ask that the safety of our children become the topmost priority for a better and peaceful future in our world.
