Lagos State government has assured the public especially parents and guardians of Ohen private Nursery /primary school, Lagos Island, whose building collapsed Wednesday morning, that top rescue operation is ongoing to ensure the safety and rescue of the trapped pupils and staff of the school.

Deputy Governor, Idiat Adebule who abandoned her official engagement to visit the victims at General Hospital, Marina urged parents to remain calm and be prayerful as top rescue operation has been put in place by the state government to ensure the rescue of all trapped in the collapsed building.

Adebule urged parents who were anxious to see their wards to allow medical doctors and government rescue team to do their work in rescuing and protecting the lives of the victims.

While commiserating with the families of the affected pupils, she assured that government would do it’s best to ensure that best medical attention is given to those that have been rescued so far, while efforts will be intensified to bring out safely other pupils and staff that are still trapped.

The deputy governor, who stated that it was too early to give the numbers of the casualty as now, assured that the state will issue official information in the tragic incident in no distance time.

Timeline of collapsed buildings in Lagos

A three storey-building collapsed at Ita-Faji on Lagos Island on Wednesday with four deaths and scores injured.

Residents of the area asked the Lagos State government to ban the construction of high-rise buildings.

The government, however, said buildings within the vicinity would be subjected to integrity tests and any which failed the test would be demolished.

Here is the timeline of collapsed buildings in 2018:

25th February 2018: Two-storey building collapsed at 1 Community Road, off Old Otta Road in Alagbado. No casualty was reported.

23rd March 2018: Building situated around Salvation bus stop near Adebola House, Ikeja collapsed. An unconfirmed number of persons died.

30th March 2018: One-storey building collapsed at 9 Abeje Street, Morikaz road, Agege. Two confirmed dead, scores injured.

29th May 2018: Three-storey building collapsed at 24, Daddy Aladja Street, Oke Arin, Lagos Island. Two dead victims were recovered from the rubble.

5th August 2018: Two-storey building collapsed at Olushi street, Lagos Island. No reported casualty.

A report by the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, showed that over fifty-four cases of collapsed buildings were recorded in 2017 across the country.

There were 33 building collapses in Lagos State and 22 in Abuja in 2012; 17 buildings collapsed in Lagos and 20 in Abuja in 2013, 13 buildings collapsed in Lagos and two in Abuja in 2014.
