Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it arrested a total of 520 traffic law offenders in the Federal Capital Territory.
Sector Commander, Gora Wobin, said the figire was the outcome of the 2018 Easter Special Patrol operation held between March 28 and April 3.
During the Easter special patrol, 520 offenders were arrested in the FCT and they were booked.
Then we had about 532 offences committed; about 182 people arrested for seatbelt offence.
Some people too were using phone while driving; that was the second most prevalent offences. About 69 people were arrested and sanctioned for use of phone within the period.
We also had about 43 people whose tyres were bad. Despite the fact that we have been talking on radio, television, newspapers, town hall community meetings, churches and mosques, people still don’t see the importance of buying genuine tyres.’’
The sector commander attributed the success of the operation largely to the cooperation of most motorists and other road users in the territory.
He said was the number of accidents recorded in the territory within the period would be released by the FRSC headquarters.
The rate of accidents remains the highest in the FCT, compared to the 36 states of the federation, according to the monthly Road Traffic Report of the Corps.
Wobin said although the rate of traffic offences has reduced in the territory, a lot was still needed to be done by all stakeholders to close existing gaps.
“In this command, I used to impound about 100 vehicles (daily) for violations, but today I hardly impound even 20.
“It means that people are, to some extent, complying; but the rate of compliance with the rules and regulations is still low.
“We still have a gap that needs to be covered.’’
Wobin said the command was exploring all avenues of communication with the people and called for attitudinal change among road users.
