Federal Government should enact modern and robust laws that will help safeguard journalists.
The government should also make the environment conducive and safe for journalist to discharge their obligations of holding the government accountable to the people.
This is coming as a total of fifty-eight journalists have been assaulted, threatened, battered, arrest, kidnapped or killed between March last year and January this year.
According to a Former Chairman, Nigeria Bar Association, Ikeja Branch, Barrister Monday Ubani, media houses should provide insurance policy for their journalists to enable them have a sense of belonging in discharging their functions.
Ubani spoke through Barrister Evans Ufelli at a media roundtable on Safeguarding Press Freedom and Safety of Journalists Amidst Rising Conflict organised by Nigerian Journalists Safety Initiative with support from Open Society Foundation.
According to Programme Associate of Nigerian Journalists Safety Initiative, Sanmi Falobi, out of the fifty-eight journalists attacked, thirty-five are from print media, seventeen are from broadcast media, four on-line media, while two freelance journalists.
He said the journalists who were fifty-three male, five female were attacked by Armed robbers, Gunmen, State Security Services, Nigeria Police, Nigeria Army, Kidnappers, EFCC, Politician, thugs and cultists.
