Operatives of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit (Task Force), demolished off-shore shanties at Ilubirin under Lagos Island Local Government Monday.
The demolition exercise was led by the Chairman of the Task Force, Olayinka Egbeyemi, a Superintendent of Police.
Egbeyemi said the on-going demolition exercise around the State was meant to create a crime free environment and to enable free flow of water from drainages and canals.
According to him, the present administration under the leadership of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode would not condone any further illegality from any member of the public
He said more than one hundred and two illegal shanties were demolished today at Ilubirin off-shore, saying people living around these illegal shanties were served seven days demolition notice by the agency which expired last Sunday.
Egbeyemi who advised landlords, CDAs, traditional rulers and other relevant stakeholders to stop allocating land indiscriminately to people to build illegal shanties/structures, however enjoined every member of the public living in illegal shanties and structures to vacate and remove their properties immediately.
Bale of the community, Sumonu Atojinu thanked the Lagos State Government for giving them adequate notice before the demolition was carried out.
Youth leader of the community, Leone Bonu who said was brought to Ilubirin off-shore by his mother when he was seven years old.
He however appealed to the government to consider them and relocate them to another area where they would continue their fishing business.
