The Silent Heroes Awards Initiative, SHA, has commended the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Olatunji Disu, for his transformational leadership, professionalism and commitment to strengthening public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force, NPF.
Its Founder, Comrade Odita Sunday, said the IGP’s leadership approach underscored the importance of purposeful command, institutional reforms and people-oriented policing in addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
Odita noted that effective police leadership must go beyond operational efficiency to embrace accountability, responsiveness, respect for human rights and an unwavering commitment to protecting the lives and property of citizens.
According to him, the country needs a police force driven by a clear vision, discipline, professionalism and leadership capable of inspiring officers to discharge their constitutional responsibilities with integrity.
He said Leadership in the security sector goes beyond occupying an office or issuing directives, saying it is about setting standards, inspiring personnel, strengthening institutions and building public trust through professional conduct and measurable results.
In his words, we recognise the importance of leadership that places service, accountability and the safety of citizens at the centre of policing.
He said the office of the Inspector-General of Police carries enormous responsibility, and the expectations of Nigerians are equally high.
The SHA founder emphasised that public trust remained a fundamental pillar of effective policing, stressing that sustained engagement between the police and the communities they serve was essential to crime prevention and improved security outcomes.
He explained that modern policing required a strategic combination of intelligence gathering, operational efficiency, respect for fundamental human rights and effective collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
Odita further highlighted the importance of personnel welfare, continuous professional training and improved operational capacity, describing these factors as essential to motivating officers and enhancing their effectiveness in the discharge of their duties.
He observed that police officers working under demanding and often dangerous conditions deserved adequate institutional support, professional recognition and leadership that promoted integrity, discipline and excellence.
“The men and women who serve in the security sector make enormous sacrifices, often away from the public spotlight. Recognising their service and encouraging exemplary leadership are important steps towards building stronger and more responsive institutions,” he stated.
Odita explained that the Silent Heroes Awards Initiative was established to recognise individuals whose leadership, service and contributions had made meaningful impacts on society, particularly in security, governance, community development and national advancement.
He said the initiative believed that celebrating outstanding achievements and exemplary leadership could encourage professionalism, strengthen institutional accountability and inspire more Nigerians to contribute positively to national development.
According to him, recognition should not be based solely on titles or positions but should reflect character, commitment to duty, institutional impact and genuine service to humanity.
He added that leaders entrusted with public responsibilities should be assessed by their contributions to institutional development, their dedication to the welfare of citizens and their ability to deliver meaningful results.
The SHA founder also called on Nigerians to support initiatives aimed at strengthening the country’s security institutions, stressing that national security was a collective responsibility requiring cooperation among government agencies, communities, civil society organisations and the private sector.
He maintained that effective collaboration between the police and members of the public would improve intelligence sharing, enhance crime prevention and strengthen confidence in law enforcement agencies.
Odita expressed optimism that sustained reforms, professional leadership and stronger partnerships between the police and citizens would contribute significantly to improved public safety and a more responsive policing system.
He reiterated the initiative’s commitment to promoting excellence, integrity, accountability and service, urging public officers to remain focused on their responsibilities to the Nigerian people.
The SHA founder maintained that the ultimate measure of leadership in the security sector was its tangible impact on the lives of citizens, the effectiveness of institutions and the level of public confidence in those entrusted with their protection.
He said the initiative would continue to recognise and encourage individuals whose dedication, professional conduct and commitment to service contributed to building stronger institutions and advancing national development.
