The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that one Basit Kolade died after being attacked by a mob following a road traffic incident at Freeman Street, Lagos Island, on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at about 10:40 p.m.

Preliminary findings show Kolade was driving a black Lexus Jeep, KSF 115 JZ, with his wife from Ebute Metta to Lagos Island when a motorcycle allegedly hit the vehicle from behind.

An argument followed and the Jeep reportedly reversed, knocking the motorcycle and rider down.

The incident drew a crowd who allegedly attacked Kolade with dangerous weapons.

His wife was rescued by women in the area, while Kolade was rushed to Lagos Island General Hospital where he was confirmed dead.

The motorcycle rider survived and is receiving treatment.

Police have arrested four suspects in connection with the attack: Khalid Rafiq, 20; Gafar Rahim, 21; Ibrahim Azeez, 33; and Samos Momoh, 21.

The matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Panti, and is being investigated as a homicide.

Efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest other persons who allegedly took part in the attack.

Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, warned against mob action and jungle justice, noting that the Constitution guarantees the right to life and that unlawful killing is punishable under Lagos State law.

He said the directive of IGP Olatunji Disu is that cases of mob killings be treated as homicide, and anyone who participates, incites or supports such acts will face the full weight of the law.

The CP urged residents to report incidents to the police and allow due process, and assured that the investigation will be thorough and all culpable persons will be prosecuted.
