Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that the explosion incident at No 19 Wey Street, Mushin on June 22, 2026 was not caused by an Improvised Explosive Device, IED, or terrorist activity.

Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, said this while briefing journalists.

He noted that preliminary reports had raised IED concerns, prompting the Nigeria Police Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear, EOD-CBRN, Unit to conduct a forensic investigation.

CP Fatai said EOD-CBRN specialists examined the affected vehicle, recovered fragments, analyzed damage patterns, and interviewed witnesses.

Findings showed no traces of explosive materials, detonators, residues, or blast characteristics typical of explosive attacks.
The vehicle also lacked structural deformation, fragmentation, or crater effects associated with IEDs.

The investigation concluded the incident resulted from catastrophic failure of a pressurised mechanical component outside the vehicle, which released energy, shattered the front passenger glass, and caused minor injuries to the occupant.
The case has been reclassified from “suspected IED” to “Mechanical Explosion”.

The Commissioner reassured Lagos residents there is no evidence linking the incident to terrorism, insurgency, sabotage, or threats to public safety. “There is no cause for alarm,” he said.

CP Fatai thanked the public and emergency responders for swift action and professionalism.

He urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, while assuring that all explosion-related incidents will receive professional scrutiny before conclusions are reached
