The Lagos State Police Command has launched aninvestigation into the delivery of a parcel containing bullets to the residence of the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of First Bank of Nigeria, Olusegun Alebiosu.
The Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, disclosed this while briefing journalists at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja.
He said detectives were working to identify and apprehend those responsible for sending the package.
According to the commissioner, the incident occurred on May 7, when the director received a parcel delivered to his residence by a dispatch rider.
Fatai said the director became alarmed after opening the package and discovering two rounds of live 7.62mm ammunition concealed inside.
He explained that the discovery immediately raised suspicion, prompting the police to begin an investigation into the source of the ammunition and the motive behind its delivery.
“The director reported that a parcel was delivered to him by a dispatch rider. When he opened it, he discovered two rounds of live 7.62mm ammunition, which naturally raised suspicion and necessitated a police investigation,” the commissioner said.
Fatai described the case as serious and said investigators were exploring all available leads to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The police boss noted that no suspect had been arrested in connection with the case.
“Presently, no suspect is in custody. Although the director mentioned some persons he suspects may have been behind it, those remain his suspicions and we are still working on all available leads,” he added.
The commissioner assured residents that the command was committed to conducting a thorough investigation and bringing anyone found culpable to justice.
He said efforts were ongoing to determine the origin of the parcel, identify those responsible for sending it and establish the intention behind the act.
The Commissioner said the Command apprehended a suspect linked to a notorious ‘one chance’ robbery syndicate operating within the state and recovered 51 mobile phones suspected to be proceeds of criminal activities.
Fatai said the suspect was apprehended during an intelligence-led operation targeting criminal networks involved in robbing unsuspecting commuters across Lagos.
He said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect acquired a vehicle specifically for use in carrying out “one chance” operations, a criminal practice in which victims were robbed inside commercial vehicles.
“Investigations revealed that the gang operated under the coordination of a financier who rented vehicles for members of the syndicate and assigned them to various locations where they carry out their criminal activities.
“The arrested suspect provided the police with details about the alleged mastermind, whom police operatives are currently tracking.
“He informed us that there is a godfather behind the operation who provides vehicles and coordinates their activities.
“We are closing in on him and I am confident that he will soon be apprehended,” the commissioner said.
The police boss said the operatives recovered 51 different mobile phones from the suspect, believed to be proceeds of previous robberies.
Fatai said the recovery of the phones marked a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to dismantle the syndicate and curb street-level robbery across the state.
According to him, efforts are ongoing to recover the vehicle used in the operations and to apprehend other members of the gang still at large.
He assured residents that the command would continue to intensify intelligence-led policing and urged the public to provide timely information that could assist security agencies in combating crime.
He noted that all suspects would be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law once investigations are concluded.
