The Lagos State Government has ordered an immediate scale-up of waste evacuation operations across the state following the recent build-up of refuse in several communities.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the directive in a statement posted on his social media handle, assuring residents that relevant agencies have intensified efforts to clear waste backlogs and restore environmental cleanliness across the state.
According to the governor, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) and the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources have commenced round-the-clock operations to address the situation.
“I have directed an immediate scale-up of waste evacuation across Lagos following the recent build-up of refuse in some parts of our state,” Sanwo-Olu said.
“LAWMA, LASEPA, and the Ministry of Environment are currently working around the clock. We have deployed extra trucks and personnel to clear the backlogs across all affected neighbourhoods.”
The governor expressed confidence that residents would begin to notice improvements in affected areas, stressing that the government would sustain the exercise until the waste challenge is fully resolved.
“You should already see progress on the streets and we will not stop until our city is completely clean again,” he stated.
Sanwo-Olu noted that waste management remains a major undertaking in Lagos, given the volume of refuse generated daily by residents and businesses.
“Lagos generates over 13,000 tons of waste every single day. Managing this requires a massive effort, but our determination to fix the current challenge is absolute,” he said.
The governor also appealed to residents to support ongoing sanitation efforts by disposing of waste responsibly and avoiding practices that contribute to environmental degradation and flooding.
“As we continue this cleanup, I ask for your partnership. Please bag your waste properly and avoid dumping refuse in drainage channels or on the roads,” he urged.
He reassured Lagosians that the government remains firmly in control of the situation and is committed to maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
“We are fully on top of this situation. Let us work together to keep Lagos clean and safe for everyone,” Sanwo-Olu added.
The directive comes amid growing public concern over refuse accumulation in parts of the state following recent disruptions in waste collection services.
The development has prompted intensified intervention by environmental agencies responsible for waste management and sanitation enforcement.
In recent weeks, the Lagos State Government has stepped up environmental enforcement campaigns, sanitation exercises and waste evacuation operations as part of broader efforts to improve public health, prevent environmental hazards and sustain the state’s status as one of Africa’s largest urban centres.
