The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), in partnership with ActionAid Nigeria, conducted an advocacy and monitoring visit to the Baale of Ijede, Ikorodu, Chief Sikiru Saulabiu, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen community-led prevention of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) across Lagos State.

The visit was undertaken by officers of the Agency alongside representatives of ActionAid Nigeria.

The engagement aimed to assess the level of knowledge transfer, community outreach, and practical actions implemented by the Baale following his participation in DSVA’s capacity-building programme for Baales on the Prevention of Gender-Based Violence, supported by ActionAid Nigeria.

It also served as a monitoring and evaluation exercise to measure the impact of the training at the grassroots level and to identify emerging outcomes within the community.

During the visit, Chief Sikiru Saulabiu shared insights into the steps taken since the training, including convening community meetings to sensitize residents on the causes, consequences, and prevention of GBV.

He noted that the programme had enhanced his understanding of GBV issues and informed a more proactive leadership approach, resulting in increased awareness and positive attitudinal change among community members, particularly in relation to violence against women and children.

The Baale further highlighted improved willingness among residents to speak up against violence and seek appropriate support, underscoring the critical role traditional institutions play in driving prevention, early reporting, and accountability within communities.

Chief Sikiru Saulabiu expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency and ActionAid Nigeria for selecting Ijede for the intervention.

He reaffirmed his commitment to sustaining advocacy and sensitization efforts within his domain and reiterated his zero-tolerance stance towards all forms of violence.

He assured the visiting team of his continued collaboration with DSVA and relevant stakeholders to prevent and respond effectively to GBV in Ijede and across Lagos State.
