The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps, LAGESC, popularly known as KAI has organised the Lagos West Senatorial District Stakeholders and Community Engagement meeting themed ‘Building A Cleaner Lagos; Improving Compliance with Environmental Sanitation Law’ in Lagos.
LAGESC says it is as part of concerted efforts to deepen community engagement, entrench stakeholders’ collaboration and promote adherence to environmental laws between environmental stakeholders.
Kickstarted in 2022, the Community Stakeholders Meetings provides a robust avenue for stakeholders like market men and women, LGAs, LCDAs, Environmental Sanitation Officers, agencies like LAWMA, LASPARK, LNSA to discuss on burning environmental issues and chart ways forward on securing voluntary adherence to the State’s environmental laws.
Delivering his opening remarks for the occasion, the Corps Marshal of the Agency, retired Major Olaniyi Olatunbosun Cole said, ‘‘Throughout the year 2025, LAGESC intensified enforcement operations across major highways, inner roads, markets, pedestrian bridges, and public spaces.
These operations targeted street trading, illegal dumping of refuse, abuse of road setbacks, medians, drainage channels, and the unlawful occupation of pedestrian bridges”.
The Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Dr. Gaji Omobolaji, who spoke through Sanni Olayinka said KAI has remained a frontline agency in enforcing environmental sanitation laws across the State.
Through sustained advocacy, monitoring, and enforcement operations, the Corps has continued to promote orderliness, cleanliness, and public safety in our environment.
The visibility of KAI’s operations, both on the streets and across digital platforms, has further strengthened public awareness of environmental responsibilities.
Iyaloja-General of Oshodi, Sikirat Adeyanju commended KAI operatives for consolidated environmental surveillance as she revealed that market leaders around the Oshodi areas engaged the services of late-night sweepers to clear up waste on a daily basis which has further improved the general environmental cleanliness.
In addition, she extolled the virtues of President-General, Association of Commodity Market Women and Men of Nigeria, Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, for her visionary leadership and direction.
Responding to questions during the interactive session, Cole stated that the issue of PSP operators not functioning to capacity would be addressed just as he admonished market leaders present to desist from embracing illegal market setups.
Reiterating the resolve of the Agency to collaborate with Community Development Associations and Committees, the KAI top man recalled how the Agency partnered with Amuwo-Odofin Local Government to eradicate hundreds of infractions in a 3-week long operation.
A representative of the Lagos Waste Management Authority, Ashogba Jacob assured guests present about the nomenclature of the delays accompanied at the dump sites during the rainy season, while assuring that efforts will be intensified to complement existing waste management efforts in the State.
The meeting also had in attendance, representatives of the Lagos State Parks Agency, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Agency, Nigeria Legion, Association of Market Women and Men of Nigeria, Community Development Associations, Community Development Committees drawn from Ikeja, Agege, Mushin, Ifako Ijaiye, Alimosho, Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Oshodi-Isolo, Ojo, Amuwo-Odofin and Badagry areas of the State.
