The Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Olukayode Egbetokun has described promotion within the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, as a deliberate, merit-based process that reflects institutional confidence in officers’ leadership capacity, professional judgment, and readiness for higher responsibility.
IGP Egbetokun made this known at the decoration ceremony of newly promoted senior police officers, attended by members of the officers’ families, the National Chairman of the Police Community Relations Committee, PCRC, Ibrahim Olaniyan, invited dignitaries, the Nigerian press, and other stakeholders.
In his address, the Egbetokun stated that promotion in the Force is not a routine administrative exercise but a carefully considered institutional decision anchored on service record, leadership ability, operational exposure, and adherence to professional standards.
He noted that elevation to senior rank goes far beyond the wearing of new insignia, describing it as a symbol of organisational trust and confidence in an officer’s discipline, competence, and ability to lead effectively under pressure.
He congratulated the newly promoted Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, and Commissioners of Police.
The IGP said their advancement followed years of consistent service across diverse commands and security environments.
According to him, such postings demand sound judgment, resilience, and leadership maturity, all of which the officers had demonstrated over time.
He stressed that senior rank must translate into leadership effectiveness, explaining that higher command responsibilities require clarity of thought, decisiveness, emotional restraint, and a deep understanding of the strategic implications of operational decisions.
The IGP added that promotion represents a renewed call to service, accompanied by heightened administrative, operational, and ethical accountability.
Reiterating that ethical leadership is non-negotiable, he warned that misconduct tolerated at senior levels undermines discipline and erodes public trust.
He charged the officers to uphold integrity, accountability, and respect for human dignity while enforcing professional standards firmly and fairly.
The IGP further noted that the ceremony reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to transparent and credible promotion processes, which are essential for motivating performance, stabilising command structures, and enhancing organisational morale.
He assured that the Force would continue to protect the integrity of its promotion system as a core institutional value.
Egbetokun also emphasised that with higher rank comes increased public visibility and scrutiny, requiring senior officers to demonstrate competence not only in operations but also in stakeholder engagement, inter-agency collaboration, and community relations.
Addressing contemporary security threats, he added, demands strategic thinking, adaptability, and intelligence-led policing.
The IGP commended the Police Service Commission for its professionalism and transparency throughout the promotion exercise and acknowledged the sacrifices and support of the families of the newly promoted officers.
He urged the officers to justify the confidence reposed in them through disciplined leadership, sound professional judgment, and measurable improvements in security outcomes that strengthen public trust and enhance the credibility of the Nigeria Police Force.
Dignitaries at the event included the Governors of Delta and Jigawa States, Sheriff Oborevwori and Umar Namadi; a member of the House of Representatives representing Bida, Gboko and Katcha Constituencies,
Gworozo Nupe; former Deputy Governor of Edo State and Director-General of the National Institute for Sports, Comrade Philip Shaibu; and the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Emomotimi Guwor.
Also in attendance were members of the Force Management Team, serving and retired senior police officers, families of the promoted officers, and well-wishers, marking the ceremony as a significant milestone in the professional journey of the officers elevated to senior command.
