The Lagos State Government has reiterated its dedication to developing a world-class, sustainable, and innovation-driven gemstone and jewellery industry.

This commitment was underscored by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Mineral Resources, Engr. Abiola Olowu, at the 2025 Gemstone and Jewellery Conference and Exhibition (GGCE), held between 26th to 28th November.

Engr. Olowu, represented by Geologist Oluremi Williams, a Director in the Solid Minerals Department, Office of Mineral Resources, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Lagos State’s vision aligned with the conference theme, “Accelerating Collaboration for Sustainable Gold and Gem Development in Africa.”

He stated that although Lagos is globally recognised as a powerhouse of commerce, innovation, and technology, the State is now deliberately spotlighting its untapped mineral wealth, which includes clay, silica sand, bitumen, gravel, and recently discovered crude oil.

Olowu noted that the responsible development of these resources will be vital in diversifying the State’s economic landscape. “Rarely do people associate Lagos with the deep, earth-borne treasures within our reach. Today, we are here to change that narrative.”

He further outlined the State’s bold long-term plan to build a fully integrated gemstone and jewellery ecosystem, positioning Lagos as a continental hub for exploration, cutting, polishing, grading, certification, design innovation, and global market access.

According to him, the Lagos State Government is advancing a focused three-point agenda: Creating a Conducive Policy Environment, Building Critical Infrastructure and Fostering Strategic Partnerships.

The Engr reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting jewellers, artisans, and miners across the entire value chain: “Your government sees you. “We are committed to providing the tools, training, and platforms you need to compete on the global stage.”

Concluding, he highlighted that Lagos’ true wealth lies not only in its mineral deposits but also in the creativity, craftsmanship, and resilience of its people.

“The energy of Lagos is not just in our power plants; it is in the vibrant spirit of our people. Our mineral wealth is not just in the ground; it is in the brilliance of your craft and the genius of your designs. Let us tap these minerals. Let us harness this energy. Let us unlock this wealth.”, he stated.

The GGCE 2025 continues to position Lagos and Nigeria at the forefront of Africa’s sustainable gold, gemstone, and jewellery development.
