President Bola Tinubu has described the death of Segun Awolowo, a former boss of Nigerian Export Promotion Council, NEPC, as an unfortunate and a tragic loss not only to the Awolowo family, but also to the entire country.
The President said this in a statement he issued in reaction to the passing of Olusegun who was also the grandson of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
The President, in the statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, his special adviser on media and publicity, said he is deeply saddened by the death of Segun Awolowo.
The President said that the late Segun distinguished himself as a scion of the Awolowo family.
Segun exemplified the Awolowo pedigree in appearance, character and demeanour. Like his grandfather, he was a lawyer committed to defending truth and justice.
He made significant contributions to Nigeria. He served diligently as the Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council from 2013 to 2021, standing as the longest serving executive director of the agency in history.
My sympathy and condolences to his wife and children, the Awolowo family, and his mum, our own Sisi Abah Folawiyo.
I also commiserate with the governments and people of Ogun State, the entire South-west geopolitical zone, and Nigeria, over this painful loss. May his soul rest in peace,” the President said in the statement.
Also, the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has mourned the passing of Olusegun Awolowo, the grandson of the Premier of the Western Region and nationalist, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
He described the deceased, who was a former Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, as a patriotic Nigerian who served his country with vision, integrity, passion and unwavering commitment.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, sympathised with the Awolowo family on the passing of the late Olusegun Awolowo.
Sanwo-Olu, also condoled with friends and associates of the late Olusegun Awolowo, describing his death as shocking and great loss to the country.
Olusegun Awolowo Jr., the grandson of Nigeria’s legendary statesman Chief Obafemi Awolowo, a prominent lawyer, and former Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), is dead.
He was the only son of Hajiya Zainab Abah Folawiyo, popularly known as Sisi Abah Folawiyo, the renowned fashion icon and widow of the late billionaire philanthropist Chief Wahab Iyanda Folawiyo.
He died at the age of 62 years.
His family announced his passing in a statement, marking the end of a life deeply rooted in public service, patriotism and an enduring commitment to the Awolowo legacy.
The family described Awolowo as an exceptional statesman, a devoted family man and a selfless servant of Nigeria whose influence extended far beyond his official roles.
“With extremely heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Olusegun Awolowo,” the statement read.
They hailed him as “the world’s most phenomenal husband, father and grandfather — steady, wise, endlessly loving, and the constant anchor of our family.”
According to the statement, Awolowo dedicated his entire life to the service of Nigeria with “vision, integrity, passion, and unwavering commitment.”
He was remembered as a “true family man, a great friend, a wonderful servant of God, and a deeply beautiful human being,” whose generosity and humility left lasting impressions on everyone who knew him.
“He loved his family. He loved his work. He loved his country,” the statement continued. “And he lived every day with purpose, humility, and a generous spirit that touched everyone who knew him.”
The family said they are devastated by the loss but remain grateful for his impactful life and the legacy he leaves behind. “May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace,” they added.
They also announced that condolences will be received at his residence daily between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
