The Joint National Transport Safety Committee of Nigeria, JNTSCN, has highlighted the urgent need to address the rising incidents of truck accidents in Nigeria.

It referenced the tragic events of the first quarter of 2024, which saw multiple fatalities.

Its National Chairman, Taiwo Mogbojuri said this at the National Industrial and Transport Safety Conference, Southwest Region held in Lagos.

Mogbojuri stated that the theme of the conference is Promoting a prevention safety and health culture workplace instruments, national strategies and good practices.

He stressed the importance of spreading advocacy for truck drivers’ Health, Safety, and Environment training and minimum safety compliance across all regions of Nigeria.

According to him, the two-day conference is a significant step in their ongoing efforts to promote road safety and reduce road traffic accidents in Nigeria.

He highlighted the pivotal role of the organisation in enhancing road safety compliance across Nigeria.

According to him, the conference became necessary to discuss issues on how to mitigate incessant heavy duties trucks accidents on Nigerian roads and the implications to the economy.

In his words, the conference would proffer solutions to the frequent cargoes, general haulage and petro-gas trucks accidents on Nigerian roads.

He said the committee would use the platform of the conference to interact with stakeholders, especially to discuss and proffer solutions to major operational challenges facing the industry and the nation at large.

Mogbojuri expressed gratitude for the support of various regional officers and state chairmen who have been instrumental in advancing the committee’s objectives.

He noted that the Joint National Transport Safety Committee remains committed to collaborating with stakeholders, including the Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Customs Service, and other Governmental MDAs to implement effective transport safety policies and initiatives.

Other speakers at the conference spoke of the need for collaboration among various agencies of the government, private sectors with the transport unions, transport groups, companies.

The conference had representatives of Federal Road Safety Corps, Civil Defence, Nigeria Police Force, Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Federal and State Fire Services Lagos and National Emergency Management Agency, and others.
