No fewer than five thousand five hundred and fifty-seven persons have been arrested and prosecuted for various environmental offences in the last six months.
The offenders were arrested for offences like street trading, expressway crossing, obstruction/assault on officials, market violation, illegal occupiers, miscreants and other crimes.
They were arrested by operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, LAGESC between January and June this year.
Its Spokesman, Lukman Ajayi, who made this known, said one thousand four hundred and eleven offenders were arrested between January and March, and four thousand one hundred and forty-six were arrested between April and June.
He stated that expressway crossing topped the list of arrests, followed by street trading and all other offenses.
According to him, expressway crossings had two thousand nine hundred thirty-nine offenders arrested, street trading had one thousand eight hundred and forty-nine while all other offenders summed up to seven hundred and sixty-nine.
He noted that the Agency had prosecuted more than ninety per cent of the offenders, saying sentences given to the offenders ranged from three to six months jail term and community service.
Ajayi added that the infrastructure put in place by the state government were for the safety and convenience of residents.
He warned against assault on personnel deployed to maintain environmental order in different places across the state, stressing that offenders would not be spared.
