The Lagos State Government has acquired electric buses for public transportation
According to the government, the acquisition of the buses is in partnership with Oando PLC, adding that Lagosians can expect cleaner public transportation system.
The government says with the ability to travel 280km at full charge, taking into account the unique travel times in Lagos, electric buses are a game-changer, saying with an average daily usage of 200km by existing BRTs, there is no need to fear that the buses can stop while in transit.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu says he is excited to announce the first set of electric buses in the Lagos Mass Transit Master Plan as part of increased effort to modernise every sector of Lagos.
According to him, the new electric buses will not only reduce carbon emissions but will also increase efficiency, meaning that Lagosians can say goodbye to high fuel costs and hello to cost-efficient transportation.
In his words, government shall be running a pilot scheme over the next few months to gather sufficient data required to analyse the operational efficiencies relative to the current BRT buses to further improve our public transport service.
According to him, this collaboration is a testament to commitment to creating a sustainable future for Lagos.
He said government understand the need for charging stations to power electric buses, which is why they are partnering with Oando Clean Energy Limited to strategically place Universal Chargers at public places like malls and gas stations.
Sanwo-Olu informed that government also plan to establish an Assembly Plant for Electric Buses in the near future, saying this is just the beginning of efforts to transform Lagos into an even smarter city to increase fleet of electric vehicles, further modernising the Lagos transportation system.
The Governor stated this in a statement made available to newsmen.
