The driver of the Lagos State Government Workers’ official bus that crashed into a train at the PWD bus stop has been arrested after the incident by the operatives of the Railway Police Command.

The driver who also commenced psychiatric, psychological and drug tests was said to have ignored warnings from the Nigeria Railway Corporation flagman and other drivers when the bus was crushed by the train.

The driver was brought to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, for the test in preparation for possible prosecution.

Commissioner of Police in charge of the command, Yetunde Longe, confirmed the arrest of the driver to newsmen at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH.

Longe told newsmen that the police had handed the driver over for medical examination because there was flag officer at the railway crossing flagging him down, but he refused to stop

According to her, that is why the police must subject him to a thorough medical examination.

She also continued that “As a driver, this is one of the tests you have to take note off because when you get to a level crossing, the train will be hooting the horn for people to know he is coming. Drivers should ensure they are patient until the train passes.”

On the barrier at the railway line, the CP said: “Unfortunately now, we don’t have such thing there but there is a signalman who always the red flag this morning before the incident happened but the driver never obeys the signalman.”

“The driver if found culpable would be prosecuted and we are working with the state department of public prosecution, they are gathering evidence to prosecute him. The driver has been arrested and he in our custody.

Also, the Managing Director, of Nigerian Railway Corporation, Fidet Okhiria, disclosed that the Lagos State Staff Bus driver didn’t stop for the moving train that it collided with which led to the death of several persons.

Three bodies have so far been recovered from the scene, while several others are injured, according to the National Emergency Management Agency.

However, Okhiria gave an account of the brief he got on the accident while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos State.

He urged Lagos drivers to be more careful when passing through the level crossing, to avoid train accidents, while he appealed to motorists to consider the level crossing at all times.

Okhiria said when motorists get to the level crossing, they should not ignore the point where they should stop.

Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Taofiq Adebayo, had said in a statement that a Lagos State Government staff bus was crushed by a moving train at PWD, Ikeja.

Adebayo who said the staff bus was with registration no 04A- 48LA, noted that the enforcement officers of LASTMA were the first emergency responders at the scene of the accident.

He said they had called other emergency responders to join in the rescue, adding that the accident recorded some casualties as the staff bus was fully loaded with government workers going to the office on Thursday morning.
