In a bid to improving State Counsel’s professional effectiveness in line with global best mediation practice, Lagos State Citizens’ Mediation Centre has organised a special training for Counsel on the legal and psychological aspects of mediation practice.
Speaking at the in-house training with themed: Continuous Capacity Building in Mediation Practice at the auditorium of Folarin Coker Staff Clinic, Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Titilayo Shitta-bey commended the agency for the initiative, and particularly for extending the training to majority of counsel in the ministry.
According to her, this training is a laudable one and it will go a long way in improving the capacity of State Counsel to deliver better mediation services to residents of Lagos State”.
In her remarks, Director, Citizens’ Mediation Centre, Biola Oseni stated that the training was organised to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of State Counsel in mediation practice.
She said it is imperative for mediators to be well grounded professionally by applying every necessary skills that would enable them have hitch-free dispute resolutions.
In his presentation, titled “Emotional intelligence/Psychology of Mediation”, a facilitator, from the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators, Lagos Branch, Dr. Yemi Agbelusi, stressed the importance of emotion in mediation and how it affects disputing parties.
According to him, “parties who are in disputes are most times, emotionally disturbed, hence, emotions in mediation should be effectively managed in order to have amicable resolution of disputes”.
