Twenty-three new cases of the #COVID19 have been reported in Nigeria, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 174.

Of the 23 cases, nine are in Lagos, seven are in the FCT, five are in Akwa Ibom, while Kaduna and Bauchi have recorded one case each.

Currently, Lagos which still has the highest number of cases now has a total of 91 infections, followed by the FCT with 35 cases, Osun with 14, Oyo with eight, Akwa Ibom with five, Ogun, Edo and Kaduna with four each, Bauchi with three, Enugu and Ekiti with two, while Rivers and Benue have one.

Nine have been discharged, while two deaths have been recorded.

Coronavirus: Oyo prepares 100-bed isolation centre

Head of the Oyo State COVID-19 Taskforce, Prof. Temitope Alonge, has disclosed that the 100-bed Isolation centre for Coronavirus patients in Olodo, Ibadan, would be opened on Monday.

Alonge, who revealed this on Wednesday during an inspection tour of the centre, said that the centre was already 79 percent completed, expressed optimism that everything needed to make it functional would be ready in the next 48 hours.

According to him, the 600 personal protective equipment specifically for the healthcare workers were ready, “although not every care at the hospital requires use of personal protective equipment.”

“Those that are going to have direct contact with patients either in the intensive care unit or high dependency unit will require the protective equipment.

“So in all, we have earmarked 2,000 personal protective equipment for the centre alone, but we are starting with 600,”he added.

The task force team lead further disclosed that all medications that were required both for resuscitation and treatment were available at the centre.

He said that provision had been made for regular and adequate supply of electricity and water, asserting that there was an industrial borehole with 12,000 capacity tank to supply water.

“Within the next 48 hours, we would have the full complement for the ICU, which are ventilators and others items,”he said.

He added that over N500 million had been sunk into the procurement of test kits for use at the centre.

Alonge reassured the people of the state that all efforts were being put in place to ensure that there would not be shutdown of the centre once it opened on Monday.

Special Adviser on Security, Fatai Owoseni, said there had been 80 percent compliance with the order of government as regards closure of markets, dusk to dawn curfew and other directives.

Owoseni, who said security agents were working to ensure that government orders were obeyed, urged residents to comply.

Coronavirus: Amosun donates N25m to Ogun government

Former governor of Ogun, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has donated N25 million to support the state in checking the spread of the coronavirus in the state.

Amosun disclosed this in a letter sent to Gov. Dapo Abiodun.

The letter was dated 31 March.

Amosun said the donation was a personal contribution.

“Please be informed that the sum if N25million has been transferred and cleared into the Access Bank Account (No 1384210113 Ogun Coalition Against COVID-19) as my personal contribution for the management of COVID-19 challenges in Ogun.

” I am in constant touch with federal agencies in and outside Ogun with a view to offering maximum assistance to our people in these trying times.

“In addition, arrangements are also in place to assist in ameliorating the challenges arising from the lockdown in Ogun within the period by supporting 25,000 households across the state.

” It is my fervent prayer that the Almighty God will see our people in Ogun and indeed Nigeria through the COVID-19 pandemic,” the letter stated.

Coronavirus spreads to Akwa Ibom as Nigeria reveals 23 new cases

The coronavirus pandemic has spread to Akwa Ibom state in what appears to be its inexorable rampage across Nigeria.

Nigeria Centre for Disease Control reported five new cases in the state, east of the country, on Wednesday night as the national tally reached 174.

Lagos has nine new cases, FCT Abuja 7, Kaduna and Bauchi State one each.

“As at 08:00 pm 1st April there are 174 confirmed cases of #COVID19 reported in Nigeria. Nine have been discharged with two deaths”,NCDC said.

Coronavirus: Niger govt begins fumigation of public places

Niger State has started the fumigation of public places against the spread of COVID-19 in the state.

Governor Abubakar Bello who was represented by the Commissioner for Environment and Forestry, Alh. Mohammed Zakari, flagged off the fumigation exercise at the Kure Ultra-Modern Market on Wednesday in Minna.

He said that the exercise would be carried out across the 25 local government areas of the state.

The governor had on March 29, during a press conference disclosed that he had directed the state Environmental Protection Agency (NISEPA) in collaboration with the state Ministry for Environment to embark on fumigation of public places against the COVID-19.

The governor said that the fumigation was to ensure that the state was to protect the state from the spread of coronavirus.

“We are here because we want to make sure in addition to the restriction, we fumigate all public areas and to keep them safe, ” he said.

Bello reiterated that the restriction of movement was not to punish anyone, but a strategy to safeguard the people against the deadly virus.

He said that places such as markets, mosques, churches, schools, supermarkets, and other public places that attract large number of people would be fumigated.

The governor allayed the fears of the people, saying that the chemicals being used to fumigate the state were not harmful to humans.

He, however, commended the people for their patience and for complying with the government’s directives.
