Lagos State Government is committed to the emergence of a smart Lagos with safe and affordable water for its residents.
According to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the provision of quality water service for all could be achieved.
Governor Sanwo-Olu said this at the 2020 Lagos Water Conference with the theme: “Repositioning Water Governance and Regulatory dispensation.”
According to Sanwo-Olu, the 2020 edition of Lagos Water Conference attests to his administration’s commitment to ensuring availability of safe water and healthy environment in the state.
He reiterated his earlier pledge that he would create a safe healthy and conducive environment for the good people of Lagos State.
The governor who spoke through Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tunji Bello, said government had continued to demonstrate commitment to the pledge through various environmental regeneration programmes, one of which was the enthronement of the regulatory regime in the water sector.
Sanwo-Olu urged the people of the state to join hands with his administration to transform the state.
He promised that the present administration would continue to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive in the water sector.
The governor also emphasised the need to ensure the maintenance and sustenance of the quality of services in the water sector through adherence to the practice of “order documents”.
Earlier, the Executive Secretary, Lagos Water Regulatory Commission, Funke Adepoju, had stressed the importance of water governance and regulations.
She said it was part of the commission’s efforts at providing safe drinking water in Lagos.
“ This conference cannot be organised at a better time than now, when there is a growing need for the regulation of the activities of the players in the water sector in ensuring best practices.
“Of the six-pillar agenda of this administration, you will recall that affordable healthcare delivery and sustainable environment occupies a prominent position.
“ This underscores the fact that the state government places high premium on the provision of clean, safe and quality water in a very clean and sustainable environment.
“This, therefore, poses a challenge to all of us both as members of the public and government; we must from time to time check our activities to conform to the standards set by Lagos Sate Government.
“I, therefore, urge all stakeholders with the belief and assurance that this conference will help to reassess our mode of operation and adhere to the guidelines and regulations in the water sector reform,’’ she said.
