Thousands of members of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, across the country on Sunday protested the killings of Christians in the north and worsening insecurity.
They were led by General Overseer of the church, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, who led the march protest/ prayer walk for 2km in the National Headquarters of the church in Ebute-Metta, Lagos.
The protest kick started the 3-day prayer and fasting declared by the Christian Association of Nigeria(CAN) over the killings of Christians.
Adeboye led the Lagos leg of the protest with members of the Executive Council of RCCG.
The 2km protest/prayer march started around 10:55am from the church to the Redemption way to Coast street and back to the church.
Members were seen praying as they walked.
They also bore placards and card boards with inscriptions such as “we say no to killings”; “we say no to terrorism”, “every life matters’, “shed no blood it cries to God”, “God hurts when his creatures hurt”, “all creatures are created equal”, and “silencing others’ right is not right”.
Adeboye, who led the exercise that lasted for 15 minutes, carried a placard with the inscription: “All souls are precious to God”.
He said there were some things the government could do alone and there were others that they cannot do alone that was why they had to pray for the country that God should have mercy on Nigeria.
“We pray that that there will be peace and security in Nigeria. God sees all things and knows where the terrorists are. We pray that God sends His light to Nigeria and expose the evildoers in the country. That God should uproot all their sponsors.”
Pastor Enoch Adeboye, said every soul lost to insurgency is precious to God whether a Christian or a Muslim.
Adeboye led his congregation on prayers for the peace and security of the country, saying, “Lord, have mercy on Nigeria. Let there be peace and security in Nigeria. God sees all things and knows where the terrorists are fighting. We pray that God send His light to Nigeria and expose the evildoers in the country.
“Every soul is precious to God whether a Christian or a Muslim. Father, we declare no more death of the innocent in Nigeria.
“After the service, we are all going for a prayer walk. We’ll march according to our age. There are some who would march round the church because of their age and there are some who would march with me to Atan Cemetery and back.”
The cleric prayed that God uproots all the sponsors of terrorism in Nigeria.
He said, “It is written that if my people who are called by my name can humble themselves and call on me, I will heal their land” making reference to 2 Chronicles 7:14.
Adeboye lamented that some countries now ban Nigerians from coming into their territories as he prayed for the restoration of the nation.
He preached briefly on ‘Songs of Victory’ with text from Psalm 18:1-3 after which he led the congregation on the prayer walk.
The Christian Association of Nigeria had declared a three-day fasting and prayer beginning January 31st to empower the government and military forces to conquer the fight against terrorism and the spate of killings in the country.
President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Reverend Samson Ayokunle, called on the Federal Government to put an end to insecurity and bloodshed in the country.
Reverend Ayokunle who spoke to journalists at the end of the three-day special fasting and prayer for Nigeria on Sunday, asked the government to up their game because their best is not enough.
“My message to Nigerians and the government is to urge the administration to up their game on the issues of insecurity.
“They said they are trying but their best is not the best; daily bloodshed is happening and we cannot be playing politics with the lives of men and women, they have the right to live and when they are dying, we cannot keep quiet.
“We don’t want bloodshed in Nigeria again,” he stressed.
The CAN President also called on the security heads to adopt a more modern approach in fighting crime, insisting that there is no reason why a victim will stay for days in the hands of kidnappers.
He called on politicians to stop using the lives of people to play politics and when there is an eventual stop to the bloodshed in the country, the government will get a commendation.
