Lagos State Government through Citizens Mediation Centre, has restated commitment to amicable disputes and conflict resolution, the promotion of peaceful and harmonious co-existence in the state.
The Centre which is a unit under the Lagos State Ministry of Justice, said teaching the people to treat the environment in a friendly way would reduce conflict, crimes and truancy in the communities consequently reducing litigation and the amount of tax payers money used in funding them.
According to Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Moyo Onigbanjo, stated this at a briefing in conjunction with United Nations Information Office, to commemorate the United Nations International Day of Peace, on Saturday, with the theme :Climate Action for Peace “Clear Blue Skies”.
Onigbanjo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria stated that adopting this strategy for pursuing peace rather than intervening when crimes might had been committed would set Lagos State in the position of a pacesetter for other States to emulate.
According to him, to buttress the importance this year’s celebration and the need to raise necessary awareness and draw attention of policy makers and stakeholders to urgency in lowering greenhouse emissions, building resilience and improving education on climate change, government through the Centre had listed activities for this year’s celebration.
He said the events scheduled for the celebration included, Tree planting Day hold on Saturday at the Gani Fawehinmi Park at Ojota, waste to wealth handing over of used plastics to recycling companies and proceeds handed over to less privileged pupils for their school fees, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and other members of the Lagos State Executive councils and top government officials would also lead by example and indicate their commitment to the Green Lagos Project by planting trees.
The Commissioner who spoke through Director, Civil Litigation, Saheed Quadri, thanked Governor Sanwo-Olu for his exemplary leadership role and unflinching support towards the promotion of peace in the State.
