President Muhammadu Buhari has affirmed that security remained at the apex of his priorities.

Buhari assured Nigerians that successes recorded in degrading terrorists in the North-East would be extended to parts of the country experiencing security challenges.

He gave the assurance when he received members of executive committee Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) led by their President, Dr Francis Faduyile, at the State House, Abuja, saying criminals took advantage of the focus on the challenges in the North-East to commit crimes in other parts of the country.

The president noted that efforts were ongoing to improve on employment level, following the success in getting many persons into the agriculture sector.

He expressed the hope that opening up the economy for investments and getting the youths engaged would control crime rate in the country.

On health and education, Buhari urged states and local governments to play stronger roles in complementing the efforts of the Federal Government, especially in getting more children into classrooms.

“The issues of health and education are constitutional. If there are too many almajiris in a state, then the government is not following the Constitution.

“The states also have elite who are educated enough to remind their governments about their responsibility to almajiris,’’ he said.

Earlier, the NMA president had congratulated Buhari on his re-election.

Faduyile attributed the president’s return to efforts made by the government to reposition the country, especially in the health sector, where a cancer centre was established at the University of Lagos Teaching Hospital.

He commended the president for always looking towards the association to appoint competent members for positions in the health sector.

He assured that the association would continue to partner the government to bring good health services to Nigerians.

The NMA leader said that there was need to make National Health Insurance Scheme compulsory for all Nigerians, including those in the informal sector.

According to him, some special treatments, like cancer, will require funds that might be beyond the reach of many.

He urged the Federal Government to further strengthen primary health care system, institute a health bank where medical professionals could access loans for facilities.

Faduyile also called for removal of duties on imported medical equipment and that the government should give more attention to security.

He canvassed that the budget on health should be improved from four per cent per cent to 15 per cent.

Also, President Muhammadu Buhari says those politicising isolated cases of insecurity in the country are not patriotic. He further disclosed that his government will be tough on the cancer of corruption.

The President made this statement while receiving the National Executives of the Buhari Campaign Organisation at the State House.

He said, “Your contribution during the election is commendable. Let me use this medium to assure you that you would not be disappointed because this second term, I intend to renew efforts in securing the country, fighting corruption and strengthening the economy.

“Every country has security challenges, while we have made significant progress in fighting against terrorism, we acknowledge that there are new and emerging challenges of Kidnapping and banditry. I assure you that we will not relent in our efforts to secure the country from criminal activities.

“Those who politicize the isolated incidents of insecurity are not patriotic Nigerians. I am confident that this administration uses all the resources at its disposal to protect the lives of all Nigerians and not just prominent Nigerians but all.

“We will continue to be tough on the cancer of corruption”.

The President said that every country around the world is facing one security challenge or the other, assuring the group that they would not be disappointed.

He pointed out that there are new challenges of banditry and kidnapping around the globe and Nigeria has made significant progress, noting that the government will not relent in its efforts to address criminal activities to protect the lives and property of all Nigerians.
