Frontline Activist, Doctor Joe Okei-odumakin, who over the decades, has been a leading voice on the emancipation of the masses and a voice of the voiceless, led a protest amidst heavy downpour on Fix Lagos/ Badagry Expressway Mass Movement.
Expressing her dismay over the deplorable state of the road, Okei-odumakin describe the road as a gateway of pain and anguish, stating that the gridlock commuters go through daily on that road is unbearable.
As a woman of conviction and promoter of good causes, she demonstrated her resilience further today as she defied heavy and thunderous rainfall to express the lingering displeasure of the users of the road.
The Badagry Expressway, with its subsisting economic opportunities as it is reported, states that the federal government of Nigeria generates a staggering estimated revenue of six hundred billion naira (N600B) annually through import duty.
The road has perennially been the most deplorable international route, connecting West African countries. It was initially constructed in the early 1970s but has been without a maintenance scheme nor palliatives.
For over nine years, there has been construction on the road, commencing at Orile Iganmu. The
snail pace of construction work on the road is really worrisome.
Construction work began in 2009, sectors 1 & 2, which covered Orile and Okokomaiko was scheduled for completion in 2019. Lasting for a period of 10years.
They had to stop work for 3 years, 2013 to 2016 to relocate their pipelines buried between Alakija and Abule Ado.
The third section experiencing delay due to fence of Ojo barracks that must give way to road expansion.
However, in May 2018, expansion work stopped abruptly. There is no end to the suffering of commuters plying the road in sight soon.
While addressing the irated group of people including the indegenes of the ancient city of Badagry, market women and students, members of National Union Road Transport Workers, NURTW and the civil society community, Okei-odumakin posited that the federal government must as a matter of urgency declare a state of emergency on the road, stating that the Federal Government must expedite actions in delivering a world class international route on the road.”
The Convener, #FixLagosBadagryRoad, Amb Mark Akande, who also addressed the crowd further asserted that Now is the time Lagos/Badagry Express road should be made motorable within the next 100 days.
