Lagos State Government says rescue operations following the building collapse in the Ita Faji area on Lagos Island have been concluded.

The government said this after emergency officials said they had reached ‘ground zero’ on the site, meaning that all the rubbles had been excavated and there was no evidence that anyone was still trapped.

This was made known after the state Head of Service, Hakeem-Muri Okunola, visited the scene of the incident for an on-the-spot assessment.

He also visited the hospitals where the rescued persons are receiving treatment.

According to the government, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency,LASEMA, and other relevant stakeholders including the Ministry of Health, are now intensifying efforts to save the lives of the rescued victims.

Also, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, has debunked claims that over one hundred pupils were trapped in the collapsed building on Lagos Island.

Its General Manager, Adeshina Tiamiyu, speaking at the site of the incident, confirmed that the floor that housed the school could not accommodate up to one hundred pupils.

Tiamiyu, however, did not give the figure of pupils in the school, saying only the school administrator could tell the number of pupils in the school, but the proprietor was also at the hospital receiving treatment.

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress, has expressed shock and deep sadness at Wednesday’s building collapse.

Its National Publicity Secretary, Lanre Issa-Onilu, expressed worry that the frequency of building collapse and its attendant human casualties in the country had become abnormal.

He charged relevant regulatory agencies in the country to be awake to their responsibilities to avoid such in the future.

Some of the injured pupils in the building collapse at Ita-Faji, Lagos Island, are in stable condition and are receiving adequate medical attention in some hospitals in Lagos.

According to Medical Director, General Hospital Lagos, Ismail Ganikale, some of the patients had been stabilised, while others were still being attended to.

Ganikale, said the management had rallied the medical team and was trying to get the actual number of casualties.

He said names of the patients in stable condition were pasted at the General Hospital for easy identification by their relatives.

Also, Chairman, Lagos Chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association, Saliu Oseni, says the association has been going round the hospitals to monitor the treatment of the victims.
