Police Service Commission, PSC, says it is determined to chart a new direction for its services and reposition the Police Force, in line with its mandate.
Toward this, it said it would begin deliberations on how to drive the process in a retreat for its management beginning in Enugu on Monday.
Its Head, Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, said the four-day has “Repositioning and Strengthening the Police Service Commission for Effective Mandate Delivery” as theme.
Ani said the commission had assembled stakeholders in the policing sector and other high profile resource persons to brainstorm on the best way forward for the Police.
According to him, the retreat is expected to produce a strategic plan that will serve as a roadmap for the commission’s decision-making processes in a robust pursuit of its mandate.
Ani said PSC Chairman, Musiliu Smith, a retired Inspector-General of Police, has said the retreat would set the agenda for the new management of the commission inaugurated on July 25 by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Smith, he added, said the commission was committed to speedy repositioning of the Police Force for optimum efficiency and effectiveness.
Ani said two papers – “PSC: From Potential to Effective Mandate Delivery” and “PSC/Police Relationship: Making it beneficial for Nigerians”, would be delivered at the retreat.
Those expected, according to him, are Inspector-General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris and the hierarchy of the Force in the South-East.
Others are the Chairman of Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Police Affairs, Human Rights and Development bodies, British High Commission and the U.S. Embassy.
Also on the list are Director-General, Bureau of Public Service Reforms and National Coordinator of SERVICOM, among others.
Ani said the commission was constitutionally charged with the responsibilities of recruitment, promotion and discipline of officers of the Nigeria Police up to the rank of Deputy Inspector-General.
