In order to curb accidents during the Eid-el-fitri celebrations, Federal Road Safety Corps will be covering forty-five road corridors with special patrols.
According to the corps, this is to trend down on traffic crashes by at least fifteen percent and fatalities by thirty percent during the period.
Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem says the corridors are Sokoto-Tambuwal-Jega-Birnin Kebbi corridor, Katsina-Kano-Wudil-Dutse-Azare-Potiskum corridor, Kaduna-Saminaka-Jos corridor, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano corridor.
Also included are Okene-Ogori-Isua-Owo corridor, Makurdi-Otukpo-Obollo Afor-nineth Mile corridor, Asaba-Abraka-Ughelli-Warri corridor, Ibadan-Ogere-Sagamu corridor, Sagamu-Mowe-Lagos corridor.
He called on all road users to imbibe the attitude of proper use of the roads by not only driving to stay alive, but equally to save the lives of other road users.
Sokoto State Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps, Sani Hamzat says no fewer than 170 personnel will be deployed for traffic control in various parts of the state during Eid-el-Fitr festivities.
Hamzat said the corps had also organised stakeholders meeting to ensure coordinated response in case of any emergency, saying officials of the state Hisbah Commission, Fire Service, Road Transport Unions, Road Marshals, Police and other security agencies that attended the stakeholders meeting would also participate in traffic control throughout the period.
He said special traffic control plan was designed for Sokoto, Illela, Tambuwal, Isa among others in view high volume of traffic expected during the Sallah festival.
According to him, busy and densely populated roads such as Sokoto-Illela, Tambuwal-Jega, Isa-Sabonbirini, Sokoto-Gusau and others would have high deployment of personnel.
Hamzat enjoined drivers, travelers and other road users to prioritise safety while on roads to avert accidents, calling on drivers adhere to traffic regulations and ensure that their vehicles were road worthy.
The Commander said the reintroduced night patrols would be sustained in partnership with the police, urging the people to promptly report why traffic accident or misuse of the roads, for prompt intervention, so as to save lives.
Federal Road Safety Corps in Kebbi has deployed 500 personnel to ensure smooth Eid-El-Fitir celebration.
Sector Commander, Shehu Umar, made this known in Birnin Kebbi, saying the command would monitor the conduct of road users to check road crashes during the sallah festivities.
“We will focus on traffic control, speeding, dangerous driving and overtaking, failure to use and instal speed limit, drunken driving, among others.”
He said the personnel would also monitor drivers to ensure that motorists respect traffic rules and regulations.
“We will assign some of the personnel to Jega-Sokoto-Tambuwal Road, Jega-Yauri Road, Koko-Zuru Road and Birnin Kebbi-Jega Road as well as Argungu-Sokoto Road among others.”
Umar urged motorists to adhere to traffic rules in order to avoid accidents.
He warned motorists against overloading and dangerous driving, stressing that anyone found wanting would be dealt with accordingly.
“Our primary concern is to prevent road crashes by mobilising road users to desist from dangerous driving, especially overtaking at sharp bend, among others,” he said.
