For the purpose of effective enforcement of environmental laws in Lagos State, Government has resolved to forge and enhance its partnership with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
According to government, the enforcement of environmental laws is necessary to achieve a clean, healthy and sustainable environment as well as prevent epidemics as sanitation and environmental hygiene are non-negotiable prerequisites for a megacity like Lagos.
Environment Commissioner, Babatunde Durosinmi-Etti said government had strengthened its regulatory Agencies such as the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, to enforce compliance with standards and regulations to curb all unsanitary behaviour.
He said the enforcement of environmental laws was necessary to achieve a clean, healthy and sustainable environment as well as prevent epidemics as sanitation and environmental hygiene are non-negotiable prerequisites for a megacity like Lagos.
According to him, Lagos State had strengthened its regulatory Agencies such as the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) to enforce compliance with standards and regulations to curb all unsanitary behaviour.
Durosinmi-Etti said this when he recieved Lagos Commandant of Civil Defence Corps, Tajudeen Balogun, saying while monitoring, enforcement and compliance activities had improved, the collaborative efforts of the Civil Defence Corps had been helpful considering the size and population of the State.
His words: “Through the support of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, we have achieved a lot over the years and we want to solicit more to achieve cleaner, healthier, safer and livable Lagos”.
Earlier, Balogun assured of his Commands unalloyed support for the government, saying the Corps was a concerned stakeholder in the bid to forestall environmental disasters through purposeful enforcement of environmental laws.
Balogun, therefore, commended the State Ministry of the Environment for its efforts in ensuring a healthier and cleaner environment devoid of any environmental infractions.
