Nigerian Navy has called for the support of stakeholders, especially the media, to enable it to protect Nigeria’s maritime domain and its resources from which it derives some of its wealth.
The new Navy Director of Information, Commodore Ayo Olugbode, made the call on Tuesday when he paid a courtesy visit to the Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria, Bayo Onanuga.
“Nigeria is a maritime nation. Without sounding overbearing, it is upon the Navy under the providence of God, that the wealth and prosperity of maritime nation depends,’’ Olugbode said.
The navy spokesman said with support from stakeholders, including NAN which he described as “critical’’, the navy would be able to secure the nation’s waters.
He said his visit was to solicit for the continued support of the agency, especially in the reportage of navy’s activities.
According to him, with such support, the navy will be able to conduct its duties effectively when it goes to the sea.
“The 84,000 square maritime requires that it is monitored and you – NAN as an organisation, is a critical part of this effort, it is a collective responsibility,’’ he said.
Responding, Onanuga assured the navy of NAN continued support, adding that the agency would not do anything to undermine the service and the nation’s Security Architecture.
“You are in the right place. Once you reach NAN, you are heard in all parts of Nigeria,’’ the managing director said.
He recalled some of the exploits of the service in the nation’s waterways, saying that such feat had helped to shore up Nigeria’s image internationally.
