National Human Rights Commission, has called on the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency arrest the perpetrators of killings in Rivers and Benue states.
Its Acting Executive Secretary, Oti Ovrawah, said that it was paramount to bring the perpetrators to book in order to avert a breakdown of law and order.
According to her, “the recent killings are a destruction of what binds us together as human beings and the security agencies must dig out the perpetrators of these mindless killings.’’
“These killings have no place in our society and the government must guarantee the right to life of every person in Nigeria including effective measures to prevent attacks on innocent people by criminal gangs and other non -state actors across the country.
“The killing of defenceless citizens across the country is horrifying as it is capable of generating mutual distrust among the various groups in Nigeria,’’ the executive secretary said in a statement.
Ovrawah urged the security services to firm up their strategies with new dynamics on tackling the challenges.
She reiterated that the security agencies must make the protection of lives and property, and the respect for human rights uppermost in their operations.
The executive secretary also advised the federal and the relevant state governments to ensure that the perpetrators were arrested and brought to justice to serve as a deterrent to others.
Ovrawah also commiserated with those who lost their loved ones in the recent attacks across the country and appealed to them to remain law abiding.
