Nigeria Immigration Service has stepped up surveillance to check the migration of illegal aliens into Borno through land borders.

Its Comptroller, Bello Jahun, made this known at a news briefing in Maiduguri, saying the service had worked out modalities to ease cumbersome processes in the issuance of international passports in conformity with international best practice.

The service is determined to ensure all Nigerian refugees in neighbouring countries return to their ancestral homes with dignity.

“We are also collaborating with the government of the Republic of Chad and UN refugee agencies to enhance border administration,” he said.

The comptroller disclosed that recently the service had facilitated the repatriation of thousands of Nigerian refugees from Cameroun through the Banki boarder community.

According to him, the NIS has ensured effective monitoring of land boarders, a development which resulted to a significant decline in the rate of cross-border crimes.

He said the service would investigate complaints of alleged extortion by its personnel, reiterating the commitment of the service to protecting the country’s entry points.

Jahun called on the people of the area to co-operate with the service to enable it to discharge its duties effectively.
