Federal Road Safety Commission in Anambra on Tuesday called on the people of the state to make use of the pedestrian bridges on major highways.
FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Sunday Ajayi said the commission was not happy at the poor utilisation of the bridges by pedestrians in the state.
Ajayi said the use of the pedestrian bridges across the highways in the state would reduce the high level of carnage on the highways.
He said the commission had in the past collaborated with the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA) Brigade and the Anambra State Traffic Management Agency (ATMA) in enforcing the use of such bridges .
Ajayi said the commission, however, recorded poor response from pedestrians, expressing shock at the attitude of members of the public who refuse to imbibe the culture of using such bridges to save their lives.
He said the act of jumping into drainage channels to access the other side of the road in spite of footbridges erected on the major highways in the state was unacceptable .
Ajayi urged security operatives to assist the commission in achieving success in the fight against use of drainage channels as a means of crossing roads by pedestrians.
He said citizens were meant to support government programmes by embracing good initiatives and not to violate laid down rules.
