Oyo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency,NDELA, has intercepted 936 kg of Indian hemp.

NDLEA Commander, Omolade Faboyede, said in Ibadan that the truck was intercepted at Igboora, a town in Oyo State, saying the Indian hemp was smuggled into the state from the Republic of Benin.

According to her, the 20-year-old driver, who was in company with another person, had been arrested and further investigations were being conducted to apprehend the owners of the prohibited substance.

Faboyede also revealed that 2.5 hectares of Indian hemp farmland was destroyed by operatives of the agency in the early hours of Thursday.

She said two arrests were also made on the illegal farmland and the suspects would be prosecuted soon.

The NDLEA boss appealed to members of the public to partner with the agency by offering relevant information to tackle the illegal drug trade.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Segun Abolarinwa, had warned traditional rulers and land owners against giving out their land for cultivation of Indian hemp.

Abolarinwa had said any erring traditional ruler would be sanctioned in accordance with the law.
