Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Jigawa Command, on Tuesday said it arrested a 24-year-old ex-convict in connection with alleged theft of a Techno tablet and two smart phones.
NSCDC Commandant, Muhammad Durumin-Iya, told newsmen in Dutse that the suspect, a resident of Yalwawa quarters, was arrested in Rafinsanyi-Sanyi area, in Dutse Local Government Area of the state.
Durum -Iya said the suspect was arrested after he burgled the residence of some youths corps members on Aug. 3 at Sabuwar Maranjuwa quarters at about 9.30 p.m.
He said the corps members reported the theft to the NSCDC and with the assistance of some network service providers in the state, the suspect was arrested using tracking device on the phones.
The suspect sneaked into the apartment of the corps members while they were asleep and carted away one Techno tablet, Techno N9 smartphone and one Gionnee smartphone.
The tablet is valued at N25,000, the Techno smartphone N16,000 and the Gionee smartphone costs N32,000.
The suspect is an ex-convict. He was arrested last year and charged to court for burglary and was imprisoned for two months,” the commandant said
Durum-Iya said the suspect had confessed to committing the offence and would soon be charged to court.
The commandant advised the public to ensure proper registration of their SIM cards so that their phones could be tracked in case of theft or accident.
It is good for Nigerians to ensure they properly register their SIM cards so as to enable security and other emergency agencies to track or locate them in case of theft or emergency.
In this case, we were able to track the thief through tracking device because all the corps members’ SIM cards were registered.
I am sure the service providers wouldn’t have cooperated if such SIM cards were not properly registered,” he said.
