Federal Road Safety Commission,FRSC, says it is considering equipping its patrol teams and other field personnel with cameras.
Corps Marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi, gave the hint on the sidelines of a strategic session with commanding officers of the commission in Abuja on Monday.
Oyeyemi said the initiative would offer the commission an unfiltered look at interactions between its officials and members of the motoring public.
He spoke against the backdrop of recent attacks on FRSC officials by motorists and security agents across the country.
No fewer than 10 cases were recorded in July alone, prominent among which was the shooting in Aba of two officials by security operatives attached to the Speaker of the Abia House of Assembly.
The FRSC boss said he was considering mounting the cameras on patrol vehicles, adding that the initiative would be discussed at the strategic session.
He also said the FRSC had instituted legal proceedings against perpetrators of the recent attacks on its personnel, including the Abia Speaker, his wife and driver.
On the need for FRSC officials to bear arms, the Permanent Secretary, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Ugo Roy said the National Assembly would decide on appropriate legislation.
Roy represented the acting SGF, Habibat Lawal, whose office supervises the FRSC, at the forum.
He said the National Assembly needed to first hold a public hearing on the proposal and thereafter work on the legislative process before passing it on for assent.
Roy, however, called on security agents to show good example by obeying traffic rules and regulations.
He also advised them to follow the due process in their dealings with officials of other law enforcement agencies, especially during misunderstanding.
