Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has met with the Minister of Defence and service chiefs over the state of security in the country.
Defence Minister Retired Brigadier General Mansur Dan-Ali briefed State House correspondents on the outcomes of the closed-door meeting which held in Abuja, saying the meeting agreed that the military heads should be moved back to the command centre, in order to critically review issues pertaining to security in the country.
Dan-Ali said Federal Government would procure more surveillance devices and cameras to promptly detect distant attackers and protect the troops.
According to him, the decisions which came against the backdrop of recent frequent attacks in Maiduguri, are also geared towards tightening every loophole and ultimately halt regular ambushes on the troops.
The latest was on Tuesday when a team of Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) staff and their escorts returning from oil exploration were ambushed by Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State.
On receipt of the information, the Nigerian Army mobilised and sent reinforcement, search and rescue party that worked and pursued the terrorists throughout the night.
The operation consequent yielded a good result as the Army Spokesman Brigadier General Sani Usman said that all the oil workers kidnapped by the insurgents had been rescued.
Unfortunately, the Army troops were unable to rescue nine of their colleagues and a civilian who were killed by the insurgents.
Brigadier General Usman, however, noted that many of the terrorists were neutralised while troops were not relenting in the pursuit, search and rescue effort.
To that effect, the Security Chiefs have promised to provide more surveillance devices, cameras that will be able to see distant attackers coming to the position of our troops.
The Security Chiefs who noted that rainy season was not a friendly period for them, promised to take back areas that appeared to be under the control of the terrorists.
Present at the meeting aside the Minister of Defence, were the Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Ibok Ibas and the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadiq Abubakar.
