Federal Government should promulgate a law that would allow men and officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to bear arms while on official duties on highways for self-protections.

A former Corps Commander in charge of Operations in Lagos State, Micheal Olapade, said such development would help reduce road crashes.

The officers would be more confident to stop and caution vehicles at any point in time, he said.

“I had seen a situation in the past where a reckless driver deliberately ran over four officers just because they stopped him.

“Government should look into this critically; the number of officers the FRSC is losing on yearly basis to reckless drivers is very alarming.

“Bearing of arms by FRSC officials will be for self-defence to guard against any unfavourable conditions.

“Any driver will think it twice before attacking officers carrying arms; motorists will comply with traffic rules and regulations and thereby reduce crashes on the road,” he said.

Assistant Corps Marshal Zone 2 Command Lagos, Shehu Zaki, also said the corps was planning new safety measures under its operational system.

Zaki, the Zonal Commanding Officer in charge of Ogun and Lagos State Commands of FRSC, said that the zone had deployed over 100 top officers in Lagos to improve service efficiency.

He said the corps was in pursuit of excellence and would soon initiate new plans to curb crashes along the road, saying the deployment and relocation of its operational resources to highways following the ongoing reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway had brought sanity to the axis.

The zonal commander advised motorists to drive safely, especially, during the Ramadan to prevent crashes and save the lives of passengers in vehicles.
