Human rights activist and President, Women Arise, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, has called on the Federal Government to extend its whistle-blowing policy to human trafficking in order to expose the syndicates responsible for the menace.
Okei-Odumakin, who made the call at a two-day workshop organised by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons at the Government House in Benin, described human trafficking as a tragedy, modern slavery and a sin that has become worrisome.
She noted that the challenge required that a state of emergency be declared as part of efforts to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
She also suggested that those who escape or are rescued must be rehabilitated.
Okei-Odumakin, who was the chairman of the workshop themed “Human Trafficking: Plight, Plan and Way Forward,” emphasised the need for all Nigerians to speak up against the problem, which she said had plagued the country for too long.
