Lagos State Government is concerned about the living conditions of inmates in Prisons in the State and committed to ensuring prisons have conducive environment and facilities that can guarantee reformation of inmates.
To this end, the Government has set up a committee headed by the Director of Public Prosecution, Titilayo Shitta-Bey to review cases of inmates on the awaiting trial list, with a view to decongest the overcrowded Prisons by fast tracking the trial process.
Attorney-General of Lagos State, Adeniji Kazeem said this while leading a team of officials from the Ministry, who were received by the State Controller of Prisons, Olumide Tinuoye during a fact finding visit to Ikoyi and Kirikiri Medium Security Prisons.
According to him, the importance of the visit is to do a first evaluation of the welfare of inmates, determine the number of inmates awaiting trial and the reasons for the delay of their trial.
The Attorney-General who noted the deplorable state of facilities in the Prisons visited, particularly the Clinic, pledged the support of the State Ministry of health to provide essential drugs for sick inmates.
Tinuoye, who conducted the tour of the Prison facilities, had earlier explained that 6,047 inmates constituting 81% of the total State Prison population of 7,714 are on the awaiting trial list, while the remaining 1,390 are serving convicts.
He acknowledged the poor State of facilities at the Prisons, while calling for the support the Lagos State Government in addressing the issue of Prison overcrowding.
