Nigerian Police has said it would not allow an anti-government protest planned in Lagos by music star Innocent Idibia known as 2face.

The popular artist, called on Nigerians earlier this week to march on February six in protest of the government’s handling of the country’s economic crisis.

Lagos Police Commissioner, Fatai Owoseni said information reaching the police show that some hoodlums were planning to hijack the peaceful protest, as such, the police won’t allow it to hold in Lagos.

Owoseni said police knows 2face does not have the capacity to contain such a crowd and they would not fold their hands and watch while things go out of hand.

In a video posted on his Facebook account, 2face urged Nigerians to come out in a peaceful and articulate manner for the march, saying there need for urgent solutions to the challenges facing Nigerians has become very clear.

Meanwhile, Activist-lawyer Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa has said the police cannot stop the planned February six mass rally organised by popular musician Innocent Idibia popularly known as 2face.

Adegboruwa said he considers it to be an attempt to intimidate those who wish to partake in the rally, saying for the information of the police commissioner, Nigeria was a democratic country governed strictly in accordance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution.

According to Adegboruwa, “Section 39 of the Constitution grants freedom of expression, including the right to be heard and to disseminate information and ideas, saying Section 40 grants the right to associate and gather together. Section 38 grants the right to freedom of movement and peaceful assembly.

He said he believed the police boss had a copy of the Constitution, to guide his actions and utterances on the matter, instead of threatening innocent and law abiding citizens, who were responsible for his salary.

According to him, the issue of police permit for citizens to gather freely expired with the coming into force of the 1999 Constitution.
