Rivers State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps,NSCDC, has trained no fewer than 300 of its personnel ahead of the December ten legislative rerun election in the state.
Command’s spokesman and Chief Superintendent of Corps, Oguntuase Michael, said in Port Harcourt on Tuesday that the personnel were trained by the Nigeria Army, warning that the corps would deal with those who might want to cause troubles before, during and after the election.
According to the spokesman, flash points have been identified and security personnel put in place to nip any breach of peace in the bud, saying the training will also build the capacity of the corps in checking the activities of criminals who vandalise oil pipelines, and cause troubles.
He advised politicians and their supporters to be law abiding and eschew violence before and during the election.
In a related development, Rivers state police command has stated that the force would leave no stone unturned to ensure that the December 10, 2016 legislative elections in the state is free, fair, credible and violence free.
This was according to the commissioner of Police, Francis Odesanya, during a stakeholders meeting of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and some candidates of political parties in the state.
On the other hand, the Resident Electoral Commissioner Aniedi Ikoiwak, said the commission is ready to conduct the polls credibly, while also stating that sensitive materials would begin to move to the various units and constituencies where elections will be concluded.
The INEC had also said it would ensure that the concluding part of legislative election in Rivers State, is conducted in a free, fair and transparent manner.
This is coming few days after the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, had accused the Rivers state police command for giving security details to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), ahead of the rerun elections.
He told his supporters that by such action, the force had declared that the command is not ready for a free and fair election to be conducted.
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said it would deploy 10,294 staff to conclude the re-run National and State Assembly elections in Rivers scheduled for Saturday.
INEC which stated this in its daily bulletin issued on Tuesday in Abuja that 14 categories of staff would be deployed to make up the 10,294 figure.
The categories according to the commission, will include three Returning Officers for the three Senatorial Districts (DC); eight Returning Officers for Federal Constituencies (FC) and 10 Returning officers for State Constituencies (SC).
INEC added that the categories include 23 Local Government Areas (Collation Officers; 221 Registration Area (RA), Collation Officers; 57 Collation Officers (for Collation only at RAs and 231 Supervisory Presiding Officers.
Also to be deployed it said were 1,840 Presiding Officers; 6,609 Assistant Presiding Officers (I, II and III) and 661 Assistant Presiding Officers (APOs).
Others are 363 Reserve APOs; 21 Constituency Supervisors; 24 LGA Supervisors and 223 RA Supervisors.
The elections will take place across 21 constituencies which include three senatorial districts; eight federal constituencies; and 10 state constituencies.
