Nigeria losses six thousand of its citizens yearly to road crashes attributable to over-speeding, overloading and dangerous driving.
Federal Road Safety Commission gave the figure at the opening ceremony of the Annual Retreat for officers and men of the corps from Benue, Nasarawa and Plateau states.
Its Corps Marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi, condemned the decision of commercial vehicle operator to overload their vehicles, endangering the passengers’ lives.
Oyeyemi told reporters that the device was only available to commercial vehicles, even though it would be extended to private vehicles.
According to him, sixty-five per cent of crashes involve commercial vehicles, a situation that had prompted the decision to make the device only available to commercial vehicle owners.
He highlighted reasons why the commission must save lives first because the total vehicular density was just about twelve million to a population of one hundred and seventy-three million and a road network of about two hundred and forty-three thousand kilometres.
