President Muhammadu Buhari has joined President Barrack Obama and other world leaders in vehemently condemning the abortive coup attempt in Turkey by a group of rebel army officers and men.
The tragic events which occured in Ankara, Istanbul and other centres, resulted in the reported death of more than one hundred people.
Buhari in his reaction, said he was deeply saddened by reports of a violent attempt to dismantle constitutional authority and disrupt the democratically elected government of Tayyip Erdogan in Turkey.
According to him, the removal of a democratic government by force was no longer acceptable, saying violence can never solve any problem but only complicated them and set back the progress of democratic societies.
He also descibed President Erdogan as one of Nigeria’s close international partners and sincere supporters in its current war against terrorism, saying all should resist the destabilisation of democratic countries through coups d’état in the twenty-first century.
Democracy, he said, provided peaceful options of changing governments through the ballot box.
The President praises the courage and immediate response of ordinary citizens who in face of guns and tanks defied the rebel soldiers and forced them to abandon their mad quest for power.
President Buhari called on the President of Turkey to pursue reconciliation and offer Nigeria’s support to the government and people of Turkey in their hour of trial.
Meanwhile, Turkey has detained six thousand people over the failed coup and the number is expected to rise further.
Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said the sweep included high-ranking soldiers and two thousand seven hundred judges.
More than fifty senior soldiers were detained in the western province of Denizli.
Bozdag described the arrests as a “clean-up operation”, saying at least two hundred and sixty-five people were killed in clashes as the coup failed.
Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan says parliament might consider a proposal to introduce the death penalty.
Erdogan accused a US-based Turkish cleric, Fethullah Gulen of being behind the plot, which Gulen denies.
The arrests reportedly include General Erdal Ozturk, commander of the Third Army; General Adem Huduti, commander of the Second Army; and Akin Ozturk, the former Chief of Air Staff.
